Province of Pisa, Italy | 1173 to 1370 (3 stages across 197 years) | A bell tower of Cathedral built by the Republic of Pisa during the 12th century in a period of military sucess and prosperity. Due to mere 3 metre foundation, set in weak and unstable subsoil, the tower leaned and provided construction challenges during that period. From 1964 to 1990, stabilisation studies were done to investigate how to prevent the tower from toppling while maintaining its tilt. In May 2008, engineers succeed in stopping the tower from moving for the first time in history. | |
